New 'San Carlo Borromeo' Student Residence, L'Aquila, Italy

The building is located in the western part of L’Aquila on a site made available by the Diocese and in the close vicinity of the Regional Hospital, the University Centre at Coppito, the Finance Police Headquarters, the airport and the Centi Coltella University Sports Centre. In recent years, this area has seen the development of the town’s main commercial hub.

The rectangular construction site of approximately 45 metres by 190 metres with a 5.5% incline in the longitudinal direction faces south with a view towards Monte Velino. Seeking to blend harmoniously into the landscape, the design consists of different buildings positioned longitudinally to create a stepped progression that follows the natural slope of the hillside. This also allows for optimum exposure with respect to the heliothermicaxis ensuring that the construction isexemplary in terms of sustainability and energy-saving.

The use of natural materials, such as wood and its derivatives and fermacell Gypsum Fibreboard linings, in addition to ensuring safe disposal over time and therefore being both bio- and eco-compatible, guarantees that the production cycle respects the most advanced standards.
