Underfloor heating: Which system is right for you?
Underfloor heating has long been established as a tried-and-tested and comfortable form of heating in residential and commercial buildings. Compared to conventional radiators, it heats surfaces evenly and operates at lower flow temperatures – this conserves resources and noticeably improves living comfort.
There are essentially two types of system: electric and water-based underfloor heating.
Both have their merits – the choice depends on the building, its use and the requirements.
Electric systems use heating mats or cables installed directly beneath the floor covering. They are quick to install, versatile and particularly suitable for smaller areas, bathroom renovations or as a supplementary solution in individual rooms.
Water-based systems circulate heated water through pipes within the floor structure. They are the system of choice for larger areas and entire buildings – and reach their full potential when combined with modern heat pumps, solar thermal systems or district heating. Because they operate efficiently even at low flow temperatures, they are a compelling solution both economically and environmentally.
fermacell® fibre gypsum products have a proven track record spanning decades – offering natural materials, planning reliability and structural integrity. In response to changes in energy supply, increasing demands for efficiency and the desire for resource-efficient construction, fermacell® has developed the perfect solution: the Therm25™ element – a dry screed element that combines load distribution and underfloor heating in a single, efficient solution.
Compatible with all existing and new systems, ideal for use with heat pumps
The heating tube is milled directly into the element, ensuring maximum heat output thanks to a uniform layer, and a slimmer, more robust design
Installed as a dry lay, ready for immediate use, no drying time required; subsequent trades can resume work after 24 hours
Under floor heating in drywall construction presents planners with specific challenges: limited installation height, sound insulation to the standard required for floor slabs separating dwellings, short construction times, and the question of which heating system to choose. The Therm25™ element provides a proven solution to all of these challenges — with a single element designed for the most common applications in new builds and refurbishments.
The heating tube is milled directly into the element – a uniform layer that conducts heat upwards immediately and evenly.
Slim-line designs from 25 mm – ideal for refurbishments and modernisation projects with limited installation height.
Installed dry, no drying time required. Subsequent work can begin after 24 hours.
Compatible with heat pumps, district heating and existing systems. Suitable for all common types of flooring.
Depending on the construction, fire resistance ratings of up to 90 minutes can be achieved.
Can be installed using a floating method – including at the level of apartment partition ceilings with a slim dry-construction system.
