Achieving Passivhaus with fermacell® fibre gypsum boards
The new school, which was designed by Lee Evans Partnership and project managed by Galliford Try, has been completed on time as part of the UK Government’s PSBP programme.
Sub-contractor MiddleSex Ltd chose 3,000m2 of fermacell® fibre gypsum boards for the internal partitions and linings, because of its high performance properties including its excellent fire and acoustic ratings, ease of fixing, cutting and jointing and high quality finish. Using fermacell™ Fine Surface Treatment to finish the boards meant there was no need for plastering and the partitions were ready to paint and decorate within 45 minutes.
The original specification included double layer plasterboard, therefore, changing to fermacell meant only a single layer system was required which allowed for narrow width partitions - saving room space and time, whilst reducing material on-site. As the project was constructed under strict social distancing measures due to COVID-19, use of fermacell board ensured that there was no additional trades required.
Direct hanging weight capability of up to 150kg per linear metre.
60-minute fire rating and non-combustible A2 materials.
Internal partitions exceed ‘severe duty’ standards, with enhanced wall build-ups and Lateral Crowd Loading data to withstand impact from equipment and mobility aids.
Bio-CO2 storage and material reuse strategies will further reduce whole-life carbon.
Quicker programme times
With fast installation and reduced need for secondary materials, boards can be installed before the envelope is watertight saving time which helps shorten program times significantly. This allows schools to complete refurbishments or new-build phases rapidly, often within tight academic schedules.
Trust it. Build with it.
