Hill Dickinson Stadium

One of Europe’s most innovative and sustainable football stadiums.

Project at a glance

Delivering performance and sustainability with fermacell®

Laing O’Rourke and BDP embarked on the challenge of building Everton’s new home at Bramley-Moore Dock with a bold vision: to construct one of Europe’s most innovative and sustainable football stadiums. Valued at £800m, the Hill Dickinson Stadium is not just a sporting arena, it represents a transformative regeneration project for Liverpool’s historic waterfront.

With a capacity of 52,769 seats and a design that meets stringent safety and sustainability standards, the stadium will host major events including UEFA Euro 2028. Sustainability was embedded in every decision, from material selection to waste reduction strategies.

The project needed a solution that would:

• Provide fire performance for partitions up to 15m in height

• Accelerate installation compared to traditional blockwork, saving critical time on the construction programme

• Handle extensive crowd load and wind load requirements due to its location on docks of the River Mersey, near the Irish Sea

• Simplify logistics with one board solution for multiple teams

• Maintain robustness similar to blockwork while reducing future maintenance costs

fermacell® fibre gypsum boards stand out as a market-leading solution thanks to its extensive crowd load and wind load performance data, which is critical for large-scale venues like Everton’s new stadium. These proven structural capabilities ensure that partitions and wall systems can withstand the unique pressures of high capacity environments, delivering safety and reliability without compromise. This level of engineering assurance makes fermacell® fibre gypsum boards the preferred choice for projects where durability and compliance are non-negotiable.

The ideal choice for stadiums
Fire performance

Superior fire resistance, critical for large-scale stadium partitions.

High-Performance Materials

High density and durability, ensuring long-term performance under heavy crowd conditions.

Easy to work with

Simplified installation, reducing health & safety risks compared to blockwork.

Sustainable

Sustainable composition, manufactured from recycled materials and designed for circularity.

Throughout the Stage 4 design of the Hill Dickinson Stadium, we had a constructive collaboration with the fermacell® technical team, who were extremely knowledgeable and consistently helpful throughout the project. They were available to meet when needed and support the development of unusual details and complex interfaces that arose. We believe the project pushed the boundaries of fermacell® fibre gypsum boards application in large venues, particularly given the unique nature of stadium buildings, and that 99.9% of internal partitions were delivered using fermacell™ systems.

Antonio Tanzarella

Senior Architect, BDP

We successfully installed fermacell® fibre gypsum boards on the Hill Dickinson stadium project where performance, robustness and quality were critical to overcome extremely tight programme demands. The fermacell® fibre gypsum boards proved to be extremely durable and well suited to the demands of a complex construction environment, durability and rigidity being particularly important in this football stadium environment . We received outstanding technical support from the team, who were always available to answer questions and provide guidance, which made the construction process smooth and efficient. Given the quality and reliability, we’ve seen, we’re excited to use fermacell® fibre gypsum boards on future projects and continue delivering exceptional results.
